Travelling To Avoriaz

About Avoriaz

Avoriaz is the highest of 12 villages scattered across France and Switzerland forming the massive Portes Du Soliel ski area.

Visitors not only get to cross country borders with the ability to sample French and Swiss skiing in one day but with over 650km of pistes in the area, you’ll be hard pushed to see all the incredible scenery on offer.

Avoriaz has become a solid player and favourite amongst skiers and snowboarders looking for something a little different. Favourite amongst skiers and snowboarders looking for something a little different.

Skiing in Avoriaz

Avoriaz and the surrounding resorts may be regarded as lower lying, in comparison to some of its competition, with the highest lifts at 2466m - however its snow record is actually one of the best in France, beating the likes of Val D’Isère on snowfall numbers year after year.

With this is mind; lower slopes are all well equipped with a battery of snow cannons ready to fire when necessary. With fantastic views at every angle, skiers will see the dramatic peaks of the Dents Blanches and the Dents du Midi, travelling around the area offers a huge range of scenery from picturesque tree-lined runs, off piste glory in rolling powder fields and one of the best park scenes in Europe.
Burtons famous ‘The Stash’ a run down into the Lindaret bowl, offers an exciting path through the forest and has a plethora of natural and man-made features for freestylers to tackle. In addition to this, there are two snow parks and 2 half pipes (and that doesn’t even include the park in Chatel), one of the other areas in the Portes du Soleil easily reachable via Avoriaz. Excluding the Portes Du Soleil’s 650km, the Morzine-Avoriaz sector has 240km of piste under their belts, making even the local area expansive. Avoriaz is made up of 4 main zones - Super Morzine, Lindaret Valley, Fornet and Haut Forts. These combined give skiers and snowboards a great combination of rolling blues and reds, a nursery slope and some fantastic bowls - the Fornet Bowl being a favourite for off piste powder days.

Combined with the Portes Du Soleil there is a massive variety of well-connected skiing for all levels, with its stretch covering the following ski resorts – Abondance, Avoriaz, Champery (Swiss) Champoussin (Swiss) Chatel, La Chappelle d’Abondance, Les Crosets (Swiss) Les Gets, Montriond, Morgins (Swiss) and Morzine. As you can see by the extensive list you’ll realise just how much terrain there is to explore. Many choose to take up the challenge of the ‘Tour’ a route that helps you cross all the resorts in a loop – (if you can get your skates on) in one day, definitely a great one for those wanting to brag about how many kilometres they have managed on holiday.

More Information about Avoriaz

The village itself is located at 1800m up the valley from the well-known resort of Morzine. It is nestled effectively on a rocky cliff face, creating a dramatic view out across the valley, the rest of the resort stretches back across a sloping bowl.

It was purpose-built in the 1960s but with great care taken, so much so the architecture was modelled on blending into the cliff fronts – all wooden-clad, you wont see any ugly high rise apartments here. With that in mind, the resort is very efficiently built with almost all accommodation ski-in ski-out and immediate piste access in less then 50m for most.

The resort is totally car free, leaving snowy paths with horse drawn carriages a common sight for many, this gives Avoriaz an alpine atmosphere that you wouldn’t normally find in other purpose-built resorts. There is plenty to do other than skiing, the main village centre is compact, but with a large number of bars, restaurants and plenty of shops. It’s a very family-friendly resort with many great ski school options on your doorstep, plus fun activity centres like ‘Aquariaz’ with indoor water slides and lazy rivers to keep the entire family entertained.

It's clear to see why Avoriaz’s popularity has rocketed in the last 10 years, fantastic value for money combined the amount of skiable terrain has solidified its place as a favourite amongst many families and groups, who return year in year out.
