Skiing in Megève
Skiers wishing to explore only the Megève ski area can get access to up to 100km of pistes, where as most choose to upgrade their pass to the Evasion Mont Blanc where by access to 450km of pistes is available, certainly more than enough to explore on a week long holiday. The Evasion Mont Blanc pass encompasses several resorts, Megève being one of them but also covering other well-known areas such as Saint Gervais, Combloux, Le Contamines Montjoie, La Giettaz.
The pistes in Megève are spread across three different mountains – Le Jaillet, Rochebrune and Mont d’Arbois. Much of the area is wooded, making it a great spot even if the light is flat or the snow arrives. The variety of terrain is excellent, with the main gondola going from the centre of town and dropping in the Rochebrune area. Full of motorway style pistes, intermediates will get great enjoyment from the variety of red runs in the resort which make a up a large proportion of the skiing.
There are some great views to take-in in Megève, a favourite reachable via the Epaule red run down into St Nicolas de Veroce, here the view out to Mont Blanc is breath-taking. In the Mt Joly and Mt Joux areas the steeper slopes and off-piste take the lead with copious amounts to explore beyond the boundaries of the piste (although as always, take a guide for safety).
In the centre of the ski area the Mont Joux snow park offers freestyle skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts some great features, with plenty of jumps and rails aswell as the 120m long half pipe and airbag. In addition to the great skiing on offer, Megève does not seem to suffer too much at the hand of half term and holiday crowds, remaining a relatively quiet place to ski in comparison to other notoriously busy resorts. This also remains true on powder days where untracked runs can still be found late into the afternoon.
