About Val d’Isère

Commonly regarded as one of finest ski resorts in the Alps, looking at Val d’Isère’s credentials versus other resorts, there is certainly a good reason for it. Situated at the end of the Tarentaise Valley at 1850m, its up-market, yet traditional ski town, coupled with fantastic terrain to enjoy, make it no wonder people continue to return to Val d’Isère year after year.

Skiing in Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère forms one half of the newly named ‘Val d’Isère –Tignes’ ski area, formerly referred to as ‘Espace Killy’ which was named after the areas local sporting idol, the resort have now opted for a more relevant name, that the new generation may prefer if they haven’t heard of the sporting hero ‘Jean Claude Killy’.

Across the two resorts skiers and snowboarders can explore over 300km of pistes, covering two glaciers accessed by a combination of funicular trains and gondola. In 2016 the resort invested in lift upgrades making its new system quick and efficient. With that in mind a trip on the Solaise gondola, equipped with Wi-Fi and heated seats, is not to be missed.

The mountains in the area are very versatile and have something to suit total novice, all the way up to the powder obsessed and with copious amounts of off piste and mogul run’s, you will be spoilt for choice. Val d’Isère’s history in skiing goes back decades, the 1992 Winter Olympics featured several events in the area.

The Men’s Downhill race, held on the Face de Bellevarde cemented Val’s place in the skiing world, firmly placing it at the heart of the competition circuit with races continuing to be held in resort even today.

The famous ‘Oakley Val Park’ is there to entertain freestyle skiers and snowboarders, with terrain there to challenge experienced park goers as well green and blue kickers to get started on. Its all kitted out with its own sounds system and chill out zone for those who prefer to watch.

More Information About Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère has a status, we can’t ignore this fact, however on visiting resort it’s ‘over the top’ and expensive front is quickly forgotten and you’ll be left captivated by its beauty and surroundings. Wonderful hamlets make up the resort, with chalet style wooden and stone buildings, all fantastically lit at night and its famous church steeple proudly in the centre, Val d’Isère will romance you.

Looking to other highlights in resort and you’ll be unable to overlook the legendary Après ski scene. With 4 nightclubs and over 90 restaurants, visitors won’t struggle to find a party here. La Folie Douce is still a firm favourite, located at the top of the Le Daille gondola, the party starts from 3pm which makes it no surprise why they allow skiers to ‘download’ on the lift too, for certain safety reasons we expect!

There is plenty to do both on and off the slopes; with much of the village pedestrianised you’ll find a great selection of shops from designers to ski brands. The resort sports centre ‘Oxygen’ is certainly worth a trip. It houses swimming pools, spas, saunas, squash courts, tennis courts and a gym if you’ve consumed a little too much fondue.

Val d’Isère has a sophistication that you cannot find elsewhere, which makes it easy to comprehend why its exhilarating skiing and bustling town draws in thousands each year.
